Prototype Simplex Hinge
We’ve always used the best quality ironmongery available but, with the Scottish market being relatively small, and the emphasis now being on cheap mass produced ironmongery, certain items are simply no longer available.
One area of concern for us has been the thickness of the brass used on the hinges. Really thick leaf hinges are no longer to be sourced, so we instructed a manufacturer to make up a hinge with a thicker leaf and hardened washers based on the traditional design and dimensions.
This is important for some of the larger windows in the older properties, and some of the larger double glazed sash and case windows.
We now have this prototype which we are very happy with, and we hope to proceed with the manufacture in the next 6 – 8 weeks.

A working set of shutters provides excellent noise reduction, insulation values, as well as providing additional security. They also enhance any room as a real period feature.
We manufacture and install all types of shutters for properties in Edinburgh.
If there have been shutters previously, it can be a relatively straight forward job to reinstate them. If they are being put in from scratch, you have to make sure there is sufficient space for the shutters and any additional leafs to fold back.
You have a lower panel beneath the window which returns round both walls under the shutters, there is then a top panel for the underside of the lintol, as well as a wide set of facings round the opening which the shutters house into.
If you are considering reinstating the original shutters, we’ll be happy to advise. The original Victorian and Georgian shutters were manufactured from redwood pine, although we can use hardwoods if preferred. Original profiles can be matched, and the shutters are all mortice and tenoned in the traditional manner.
Shutters can often also be fitted to doorsets and some modern styles of windows – again we’re happy to advise.

New panelwork
On this property in Comely Bank, the original windows were in poor condition and the panels and shutters had been removed by a previous owner. Some of the original shutters were still in place in a different room, so using them as a match, we made up new panel work, replicated the mouldings and fitted replacement shutters to bring it back to how it would have been.
We also fitted two new sashes into the existing case as the original sashes were beyond repair.

Traditional horn detail on top sash
We use Vista Therm Elite units as standard. These units give a higher u value to that of a standard double glazed unit and exceed current building regulations for Scotland and the UK. This is a Low E glass unit.
Please see full technical specifications at www.careyglass.com
Our units are 16mm thick . We have adjusted the profiles of our sashes to allow us the maximum detail possible to the timber moulding as well as the maximum energy efficiency. Sash and casement windows are a traditional design and it has always been our company’s aim to keep them as traditional looking as possible.
Our windows are manufactured with haunched tenons to allow for the additional weight in a double glazed unit and often our top sashes have an ornate horned detail.
The horn on the upper sash is a traditional detail to give strength to the upper sash in large windows. To the eye our windows match almost exactly the look of the original single glazed sash.
