5 Regent Terrace – Replacement sashes

We were contacted in 2009 and asked to quote for re instating Georgian sashes to the full frontage of this grade A listed property.

The original sashes had been replaced with one over ones. The building was originally designed with six over six and six over nines on the first floor.

Our workshop matched the astrigal detail and we manufactured full sashes.

The casements in this property were needing a fair bit of attention on site. Our teams fully renovated the casements, replacing pulley wheels, sills and replacing the exterior mastic seal with a traditional sandmastic. As well as saving our clients money by renovating the casements the main benefits to them were less upheaval in their homes. Replacing casements in occupied properties is a serious undertaking.

95 % of casements can be brought back to their original condition , we therfore avoided the mess associated with replacement without compromising the end result.

The new sashes were then weighted and balanced to allow for heavier glass, draughtproofed parting beads were installed, draughtproofed  baton rods, and the easy clean system. Our new windows were then fully painted by our painting team and period ironmongery reinstated. The fanlight above the front door was also replaced with the original circular detail finishing off the job.

Our clients were delighted with the end result. Their windows being fully operational for window cleaning and future maintenance. They had also restored the original frontage to a beautiful Edinburgh georgian property.

The pride and care that our men took on this project has resulted in our company undertaking many more contracts on this street.

”Skilled and considerate workmen who took great care with our home. The quality of the new replacement windows was so good, that we had our only original window refurbished to the same high standard. The whole house is now transformed”

On this project on Grange Terrace in Edinburgh, we replaced the lower bay windows with replacement double glazed sashes. We replicated the original mouldings and dimensions so it is virtually identical to the original sash and case windows which were removed.

The upper floor retains the original sashes, the lower floor is double glazed

In the photo to the left you can see the frontage is not affected.

The upper floor still has the original single glazed windows, and the ground floor has the replacement double glazed sashes.

As the original casements have been restored and renovated in situ, there was no damage to the original panel work and surrounds. The external pointing was renewed with the traditional sand mastic finish to complete the finish.

Our sash painting team then applied the finish coats of paint on site.

The use of period brass ironmongery retains the original style.
