Specialist Joinery for Period Features

Fanlights and traditional mouldings are defining features of Edinburgh’s historic architecture. Often understated but always significant, these elements give character to entrances, windows and internal finishes.

At Edinburgh Sash and Case, we specialise in restoring and replicating these features using time-honoured joinery methods and a deep respect for detail. Whether it’s an arched Georgian fanlight or a specific skirting profile, we have the expertise to recreate what others can’t.

Why Accurate Moulding and Fanlight Matching Matters

Original mouldings and fanlights are rarely available off the shelf. When these details are damaged or missing, recreating them properly demands precision, experience and the right tooling. That’s where our workshop excels.

Over the years, we’ve built up a collection of custom tooling and cutters, allowing us to match dozens of historic profiles with remarkable accuracy. We approach every project with care – whether we’re reproducing a full entranceway or just a single run of architrave.

S&C did a great job. Their staff were professional and friendly. The windows are over ten foot high and a hundred and twenty years old so it was quite a job. They refurbished, painted and installed secondary glazing. Despite the size it whispers open and closed, and the easy clean system is still fully usable. I'm very pleased.

The service we had was excellent to replace our 150 year old single glazed windows with modern double glazing. The initial measurements and evaluation noted that the cases were in good shape and did not need replacement. The planning permission was submitted on our behalf and obtained within a few weeks. The work was fitted inline with mid summer weather conditions that proved a real bonus. The removal of the 9 old windows and fitting of the new ones was a two man operation. James and his fellow joiner showed great professionalism and stuck to the task which only took 4 days. Chantelle at HQ managed to schedule the painting to start the following day and under the leadership of Pavel this was a super job that only took 3.5 days. Again the work ethic and skill level was superb including refitting the blinds and completing a clean up afterwards. Although we are still in summer and can’t test the heat retention of the new windows yet, we have noticed that road noise is greatly diminished. All in all we are very satisfied with the operations and outcome and highly recommend the work of Edinburgh Sash and Case.

We are absolutely delighted with the work carried out by this company. From start to finish, the service was professional, friendly, and efficient. A special thank you to Chris and Sean, who completed the installation. The quality of the workmanship is excellent, and they paid close attention to every detail. They also left everything clean and tidy when the job was finished. It is refreshing to find a company that genuinely cares about customer satisfaction and stands behind the quality of its work. We have been so impressed that we have already recommended the company to our neighbour, who has since been in touch with them after hearing about our experience. We would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone looking for high-quality windows and excellent customer service. Thank you once again to the entire team, especially Chris and Sean, for a fantastic job.

Our joiners, Kevin and Jordan, did a fantastic job renovating our bay windows. Gary, our painter, also did a super job. They were all polite, clean, and extremely skilled at their work. Would definitely use Edinburgh sash and case again.

Absolutely. Our joinery work is suitable for listed homes and conservation areas. We’ll advise on sympathetic solutions that maintain your property’s character.

Most fanlights are not suited to double glazing due to their size and shape. We’ll explain your options clearly, including specialist glazing where appropriate.

Most shop-bought mouldings only cover basic styles. We manufacture custom cutters in-house to match even complex or obscure period designs.

Not at all. We can supply short runs for local repairs or provide full sets for larger projects – it depends entirely on what you need.

We typically use high-quality, stable softwoods suitable for internal finishes, though we can source alternatives depending on the application.
